What is Interventional Radiology?
Interventional Radiology (IR) is a modern medical specialty that uses minimally invasive, image-guided techniques—such as X-rays, CT scans, ultrasound, or MRI—to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions that once required open surgery.
Instead of large cuts or long recoveries, IR procedures are usually performed through a pinhole-sized entry, often as a day procedure.

IR vs Diagnostic Radiology
While a general radiologist is a diagnostic specialist who analyzes medical images to find problem (e.g., reading an X-ray to diagnose a fracture), an interventional radiologist is a procedural specialist who uses those same images to treat problem.
General (Diagnostic) Radiologist: Interpret medical imaging.
Interventional Radiologist: Uses imaging to guide a procedure.
Interventional radiologists are highly trained physicians who have completed extensive post-graduate training, first in diagnostic radiology and then in a sub-specialty fellowship focused on image-guided, minimally invasive procedures. This unique combination of diagnostic and procedural skills allows us to treat a wide range of conditions throughout body with remarkable precision.
